Using the Media Manager in a plug-in

Hello,
this thread is more of a shot in the dark, because I don't really understand what the Media Manager will or will not do, in the first and future versions.
The Alexandria presentation video showed how to add local content (and decide of a media type/scanner when you add it), and I immediately got giddy about integrating this in my Game Launcher plug-in.

This leaves quite a few questions for me:
- are Media Types in the Media Manager "extensible" by way of a patch, plug-in, or a new XML config file somewhere? Even if it is just adding a generic item for the time being, what can be done, or will be able to be done in 9.x?
- can the new media type use a newly-defined scanner (or more than one)? I think that's the easiest part, but I want to be sure. :)
- the most important question: is it planned somehow to allow plug-ins to use the Media Manager information?

Right now, my plug-in uses blacklisted modules (os.path being the most famous) to search for ROMs. It's a bit error-prone, not really flexible, and the ROM list refreshes only if the plug-in accesses it. I think a "good" way for plug-ins to access local files (as opposed to my many current "hacks") should be planned sooner than later, especially since the whole layer was redeveloped from scratch.

To reiterate, no, you won't be able to do this in the first release, but we're planning on adding support in future.
