iTunes Genre Thumb - artist info

I am currently testing the new itunes integration in plex7. No problems so far.
- But it would be nice if the genre thumbs of itunes would be supportet, too.
- Secondly, would it be possible to combine the old library (amazon scrapper) with the itunes db? I am still using the old library browsing my music in "info list" view because of the artist thumbs and info.
I think it looks nicer than just having a random album art displayed for the artist.

Glad to hear!

Wow, I didn't even know they existed :-) They may be hard to get to, unfortunately, although using a "representative" album thumb would be possible.

That is definitely our intent for future versions of Plex Media Server.

The format of that file should be self evident.
The thumbs are jpg files in the same folder and have names starting with genre-
Also of interest are these user-supplied thumbs
I tried iGenre and wasn't impressed. It breaks code signing and didn't work for non-music genres.
A Plex library based implementation is definitely on my request list (you can check the sticky post at the top of this forum)

Not suggesting you package them with the shipping version. A Flickr scraper would make a nice addition while skirting the license issue.it looks like most if not all of the user-supplied thumbs are not creative commons licensed
I have relatively few genres so being able to assign genre thumbs manually would be good enough.
Consider the Flickr group another rainy day request

I have a solution that I think will work well, hopefully I'll find the time to code it up shortly.

This work for you?
Well, YES!
As I am using igenre for a few custim genres. Could you please explain what you mean by "breaks code signing". I am a little afraid now it breaks somethingI tried iGenre and wasn't impressed. It breaks code signing and didn't work for non-music genres.

It breaks code signing because it modifies the iTunes.app directory. The signature of the application is built by looking at the contents, so editing a file or adding a new one will change the signature, and thus make it behave badly with the Leopard firewall, for example.
The way I've added custom genre thumbs in Plex will not have this negative side effect, because the thumbs are added elsewhere.

Plex will pick up the iTunes genre thumbs, and you can dump your own in ~/Library/Application Support/Plex/Thumbnails/Genre.
OK, thanks. So iTunes supplies "some" thumbs but not all - even though they list more genres in iTunes itself huh?
Also. I downloaded 1 of the thumbs from the Flickr site and place it in ~/Library/Application Support/Plex/Thumbnails/Genre naming the file bigbands.jpg, is that correct? I read above about the iTunes using genre- as a prefix?
I don't see how to change the thumb for these different genres that are missing them.

You are correct, especially since people can add their own crazy genre

Elan thanks. I downloaded several (to the file location you suggested) from the Flickr gallery and named them like genre-bigband.jpg but I don't see how to update them in Plex?

I'm looking at the code right now (sorry, it's been a while!) and as far as I can see, you just name the file bigband.jpg and put it into ~/Library/Application Support/Plex/Thumbnails/Genre. Make sure the case matches also.
Hmmm as usual I'm missing something. I've got them all named as you suggested and in the correct folder location but they don't show up when browsing the genres in the itunes menu and I don't see a way to "add" them like I can with TV and Movie selections.
Also, for some odd reason I'm not getting my usual email notification of your posts.
